OSA-SPIE METU STUDENT CHAPTER

OSA-SPIE Student Chapter represents two of the most prestigious optical societies among the world. Both are well-established and leading societies in their fields. OSA, (renamed as) The Optical society, was founded in 1916 in order to assemble scientist under a roof and to lead research and educating. SPIE, (renamed as) the international society of optics and photonics was found in 1955 to create a specialization in optical instrumentations.

METU Student Chapter undertakes these missions representing OSA since 2011 and SPIE since 2013. Student Chapter’s aim is to bring students and staff interested in optics and photonics fields together.Chapter arranges workshops, panels, presentations, seminars, field trips and organizes meetings and conferences. It also organizes Photonics Day conference series regularly. In previous years, Photonics Day conferences brought both science and industry together. The purpose of these events is to keep up with developments in science, technology and industry. METU Student Chapter is also supported by Physics department and academic staff, too. Today, Prof. Raşit Turan is the advisor of OSA and  Assos. Prof. Alpan Bek is the advisor of SPIE.

Other Student Chapters in Turkey are in Koç, Bilkent and TOBB Universities. OSA and SPIE provide resources and financial support for national and international events to Student Chapters. It is also possible to apply for fees and scholarships to attend conferences and organizations as a member.
